TROOPERS DAY OFF

I love juxtaposition in photography, so the idea that started my toy photography series was to shoot a Stormtrooper doing something you wouldn't expect, so there's a lot of juxtaposition present - the bright yellow background sets a scene you wouldn't expect to see a Stormtrooper in, and you wouldn't expect to see one taking a photograph - let alone one of a flower!

Bonus easter egg - the lens depicted here is the Canon 70-200mm, which is the lens I used to take the shot.

THE DARK SIDE

After the somewhat jovial introduction to toy photography from 'Troopers Day Off' I wanted to try to capture something a little more serious, so I set up some rim lighting to highlight one side of the figure. This particular character I imagine being Finn, so the light is poignant to his story.

WAKEN

I was introduced to the fantastic work of Vesa Lehtimaki and was immediately hooked by the potentials of creating movie-like scenes with toys, following his tip I created a scene with baking powder, with some dropped over the top to look like falling snow.

AFTERMATH

Though the baking powder was quite effective, I decided to experiment further, this time using ash from the BBQ, and thought the textures were more pleasing compared to the powder. The start of my toy photography for realistic movie stills really started here..

FORCE AWAKENS

Building on the use of ash I wanted to add more scenics to the image so I pointed a fan at the ash on high speed to blow up some of the bits, I think it worked quite well to add some misty interest to the backdrop.
